    Thirty-six nations began competition for Africa's five berths in World Cup France '98 on May 31, 1996. Qualification was completed on August 17, 1997.

    No African team receives and automatic berth to the World Cup. Cameroon, Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt were each exempt from the preliminary round of play, and automatically advanced to the final round of qualification play.

    The qualifiers were Nigeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Cameroon, and Morocco.
