During September 1996, World Cup '98 qualification competition began among the 36 participating nations of the AFC. The AFC had three guaranteed slots in World Cup France '98, and a fourth team had to compete against the Oceana winner to qualify.

When the smoke settled on November 29, 1997, the AFC had four nations in France '98: Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, and Iran
