    Asian Football Confederation - Semi-Final Round

    Each of the Group winners in the preliminary round will advance to the Semi-Final round. The field of ten in the semi-final round will be divided into two groups of five, with each group playing a home-and-home, double round-robin format. The top team from each of the semifinal groups advanced to France '98: Saudi Arabia and South Korea. Each of the second place teams advance to a final round one match playoff for the thrid guaranteed slot in France '98 for the AFC. The loser of that match had to play a home-and-home series with the Oceana championship to fill the shared berth between the confederations.

    Semi-Final round competition began on 6 September 1997, and concluded on 12 November 1997.
