    In early 1996, 170 nations began competing for the 30 open berths in World Cup France '98. Currently, there are still 120 nations left competing for those spots. Two nations, Brazil, as defending champion, and France, as host, have qualified.

  • OFC: 0 or 1 berths (10 nations)
  • CAF: 5 berths (36 nations)
  • The final draw for the grouping of nations in World Cup '98 was held on December 4, 1997.
